Wondering to start a business but not sure what it is about? Beauty business might be the right one for you if you’re really interested in it.

As the quarantine rules are still changing from one place to another, people tend to buy beauty products to take care of themselves at home. This could be the opportunity you don't want to miss.

However, what are the things you should pay attention to when opening one?

Here we elaborate some points for you

1. See “beauty” as both culture and entrepreneurship

It's great if you have a solid foundation on how a beauty brand should be, but you should also set up your mindset in the entrepreneurship mode. The skills of producing, stocking, and selling is something you should be familiar with, even if you only go for being an affiliate or reseller.

Those are important so you can handle any challenges in the business, especially if you have to explain something to a third party. So, get ready to learn. In fact, get ready to learn something everyday before starting and upon doing your business.

2. Look for a strong brand for your beauty product

If you are an affiliate, look for a brand that has a strong value and support system beside the quality. The product might make your customers' skin glow at once, but if they are poor in handling the complaints, the problem will get thrown upon you.

In the ideal world, look for the product that you can also use as well, so your buyers will get a first-hand experience from you. Otherwise, you have to find another way to explain most of the details of the product to your market.

If you literally produce your own beauty product, build one: a strong brand. Your task is gonna be bigger although in the end it will obviously be more rewarding. You need to do more on a brand setup: studying your market, choosing the right colors, taglines, logo, packaging, before setting up your website, social media, and other promotional media, and so on.

3. Ask for some legal advice

Or at least make a thorough research about it. Beauty business is directly related to skin health, something that can be super sensitive. You need to see the FDA regulations in your country or in the country you are going to market the product in.

Make sure you're completely safe to do this business. At the end of the day, you’re looking for a profit, not trouble.

But yes, none of the risk should discourage you if you do the right thing. You can ask a legal consultant on their website or their social media, but better yet, book a paid consultation session with a lawyer.

3. Assess your finance

See your financial situation and make sure that you have the separated money to start your business. If you want to get a loan to start your business, make sure you have enough assets to compensate for the worst case.

I personally don't recommend you to get a loan from a bank, but if you do, don't decide to sign a loan upon the first meeting with a bank. Shop around and see which bank has the best solutions for you.

Another way to get the capital for your new business is, if you have a [solid] networking, you can ask your family/friends for a joint venture.

There are things to consider on this, though.

One: Treat this agreement as a business, no matter how close their relationship with you. I personally suggest that, even if they are your direct family member, the transaction has to be signed and recorded in legal writing materials with 2 other witnesses.

Two: you have to be professional and really serious about compensating their money return, no matter what.

Three: failure to compensate for their loss will cost you a broken relationship with them. You have to be mindful about it.

A business has to be started with a solid confidence. However, every business owner can expect that within the first 6 month, their profit will not yet cover the whole expense. Their capital will not yet get compensated at that time

This is why it's so important to have your business budget get separated from your personal budget for your daily needs. But yes, you should be able to count the risk versus your strength, and you should be ready to work hard to smash the target.

4. Make some decision on your business strategy and manufacture

After you decide your financial allocation on your business, you need to make a decision on the right business strategy or business model for your company. There are a list of questions that you have to answer quantitatively, like: how long the process of the first production of your product will be done, how much revenue you expect during the first month, how many hours a day you have to work, etc.

5. Set up an integrated marketing and public relations strategy

You should hire a team to be your marketing and PR persons so you can brainstorm the right strategy for your company. Some things just can't be decided alone, and you better get the right people to work on it, either as employees or partners

Marketing people should decide a lot of big concepts in your business machinery. They can make things easier for you in these things:

  • conducting some campaigns,

  • creating and strengthening your brand image,

  • managing the internal and external communications,

  • providing promotional materials,

  • conducting research, and

  • elaborating outsource agents and vendors for specific purpose, including PR

We'll talk about those points a little bit later

6. Setting up your business plan

Business plan is yet another thing that you should talk with your team or partners about. A good business plan should cover the steps from starting to managing your business. This will act as a roadmap to structure and to grow your business in the long run, and then simplified into short-term targets. There are a lot of business plan forms that you can easily print out and fill with your team, including this one.

7. Get a business coach, or at least consult one

Whether you're a beginner or not, it's really important for you to get someone who can always support you, especially when a problem comes. It's necessary for you to join a business group or forum. Make connections with new people, online and offline, everyday. Actually, it's best if you can get a mentor or a coach to work together with for a longer term. Otherwise, once in a while you should invite a business consultant to assess your business and give insightful, professional advice.

Conclusion

Opening a business beauty from home, is not really rocket science, especially these days. With the right knowledge, skill, and willpower, your business will succeed in the measurable time. There are special things for you to really pay attention to, knowing that business beauty is about a delicate industry. But with the great combination of passion and work discipline, your brand will prevail anyway.
